Event Leader -  Walter Cramer

Join Walter on another Miata excursion into the Pocono Region.  Along with enjoying 103 plus miles of Miata roads, this Drive features lunch, at the Snydersville Family Diner, and, for dessert, Ice Cream at Jane’s Ice Cream and Eatery.  We will also visit the Francis E. Walter Dam and take a drive around Lake Harmony, at the Split Rock Lodge in Luzerne County.  Looking South from the Dam head one can view the beginning of the Lehigh Gorge State Park, which extends South into the Lehighton area.

The first leg of travel is approximately 55 miles in length, with our rest stop at WAWA, on Route 940, in one hour and fifty five minutes.  Our second leg of travel is approximately 48 miles in length, and our rest stop is at the Snydersville Family Diner, in one hour and fifty minutes.

If you have never visited the Francis E. Walter Dam or taken a Miata drive around Lake Harmony, this is Drive is a must.

The Drive will end at Jane's Ice Cream and Eatery, near Stroudsburg.  Following a five to six hour day, the forty minute travel back to the Lehigh Valley is via four lane roads.

We will gather at the Shell Station, 428 Nor Bath Boulevard, Northampton.  The Shell Station is at the intersection of Route 329 and Howertown Road.  We will meet at ~9:00 with a Driver’s meeting at 9:30 and a departure time of 9:45.

This event will follow the current Pennsylvania rules for COVID-19 safety.  To avoid common handling of materials, we will email the directions to participants, for home printing, and we will eliminate the usual paper sign-in sheet.  Since the sign-in confirms your agreement with LVMOC’s standard Waiver and Release, we will now consider your post to this event thread, indicating that you intend to participate, to be your “electronic” signature, indicating your agreement with said Waiver and Release (copy available on request).

We will use FRS radios for communications.  Be sure to arrive by 9:00 a.m. with a full gas tank and an empty bladder 😏.

This is now our 30th Run of the year.

Jeff, happy to hear that you do not have to ride alone on Sunday.

I hope the ride continues to be on Haley's most favorite list.

Jon, our first rest stop is at the WAWA at routes 940, 80 and 476. I have included a screen shot below. We should be arriving there between 11:30 - 11:45. If you want to discuss this more, my email address is rhetlaw@ptd.net.

I did my pre-run of my Francis E. Walter Dam Drive this afternoon and was hoping to send out the turn-by-turn directions this evening. Unfortunately, I need to address some road issues on the second leg of travel.

I left prior to noon, it was already warm and humid and expected to get even warmer so I had my top up - I know, can you believe it? As I was approaching the mountains you could see the layers of clouds closing in on the mountain tops. As I was climbing over Jonas Mountain, the cloud cover was so low and thick, windshield wipers were needed, 4-way flashers were used and all cars traveling at a very slow pace. Once over the mountain, more sunshine, heat and humidity. All in all, it really was a joy with all of those weather patterns.

The Snydersville Family Diner is expecting us on Sunday. They will be providing us our own dining area. Unfortunately, they do not provide any outdoor dining. However, those that would prefer outdoor dining, there is an option. In the past we have had picnic lunches at Jane's Ice Cream. They also provide a small menu of hamburgers and such. Jane's Ice Cream is a quarter mile from the Diner.

As we arrive at the Diner, we are at a stop sign and will go straight into the parking lot. Those interested in dining at Jane's Ice Cream will be making a right at the stop sign, travel one quarter of a mile and Jane's is on the left.

I recently learned the Split Rock Lodge - which we are traveling through - was named after a HUGE rock that was divided in half 300 million years ago when glaciers crept across the land. A photo is below.
