A NEW ROUTE TO DIEFFENBACH'S POTATO CHIPS, NEAR WOMELDORF, PA  This drive will also incorporate a fundraiser benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank. Please see the thread concerning this on our main page under Chat "Food Drive" or the 10/28 post by Alison to this thread.

When -                   Saturday, October 31, 2020

Drivers' Meeting: 10:00 a.m. (Note new time!)

                                  Depart:  10:15 a.m.

Where -                 Cracker Barrel, Fogelsville

                                  7720 Main Street

                                  Fogelsville, PA Location

Event Leader -  Walter Cramer

As Horace Greeley once told a group of Miata enthusiasts,
“Go West, young drivers, Go West, and make sure
you stay off the four lanes”.
If you happen upon Dieffenbach’s Potato Chip factory,
stop and indulge

Join Walter for a Fall morning of driving westward over Lehigh and Berks County roads south of routes 22 and 78.  Our westward destination is the Dieffenbach’s Potato Chip factory. The locals claim these potato chips to be the Best Ever, and the devotees among us can replenish their home stocks with the tasty 'taters!  Although the drive to Dieffenbach’s is a bit over two hours, I have a rest stop planned at Redner’s on Route 183, one hour and forty minutes into the drive.

Our return route of travel also has us stopping at Redner’s on Route 183 for a rest stop on the trip back.  As we turn onto Route 737 North, we finally get to travel on roadways north of routes 22 and 78.  The length of travel is 95 miles and approximately 4 1/2 hours.

We will have lunch with out-door dining at Hops Fogelsville Hotel.

Be sure to let Walter know if you wish to go to the restaurant!

This event will follow the current Pennsylvania rules for COVID-19 safety.  We will require that all participants maintain six-foot social distancing, and we will require masks to be worn when not in our cars.  To avoid common handling of materials, we will email the directions to participants, for home printing, and we will eliminate the usual paper sign-in sheet.  Since the sign-in confirms your agreement with LVMOC’s standard Waiver and Release, we will now consider your post to this event thread, indicating that you intend to participate, to be your “electronic” signature, indicating your agreement with said Waiver and Release (copy available on request).

This drive will be limited to 15 cars, including the leader, with priority given to paid LVMOC members.  If the 15-car limit is not met, we will open the drive to non-members.

We will use FRS radios for communications.  Be sure to arrive by ~9:45 a.m. with a full gas tank and an empty bladder .

  1. Walter & Nancy (Hops x 2)
  2. David & Janice (No lunch)

Thanks, Wayne. Yes, what a wonderful day to be on the road in our Miatas. Even our chilly morning start was not a deterrent. Sixteen Miatas is quite a lengthy string but with Michele as our middle and Corrina as out tail, their commentary let me know exactly where the group was at all times. Thank you, Michele and Corrina - great job today.

I do not remember any drives where we actually had to stop our string of Miatas on the roadway to let three deer nonchalantly walk across the road. Also, I never remember stopping our string of Miatas because a large branch was laying across the road and impeded our travel. Thanks Wayne for help in clearing it out of the way.

A joy to have Beth and Gary Gotwals from the Quakertown area and Logan and James Tomkins from Dallas join us today. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

@triviawayne thank you and also this group's generosity to let Fiatas be part of the family! Sharing one of the fun picture from my dashcam is when a Mustang try to get in line with us at a stop sign 🙂

Nobu, CLASSIC photo, you nailed that one, Brother. Not just the Mustang trying to gain entry, but our string of Miatas as well. Great Job.

Thanks, Jordan. This is only one trunk full of Dieffenbach's Potato Chips. I can't believe how many bags of chips our folks had standing in line. It certainly must have been a record.

I have to get some of these chips and see what all the talk is about. They must be really good

You hit another one over the fence, Walter! 👍 Those roads had some of the best combinations of curves and rolling hills that I can recall... very enjoyable!  And, again, we had the fortune of nice weather... a bit chilly, but fine for the top down, with windows up and a bit of heat turned on, we were toasty.  Oh, and lots of cows, too 🤠.

Thanks, Dave. I agree with you, I enjoy that combination of roads as well. I remember from the Dieffenbach's pre-run, Tom Davies loved them also - he said something like "if there are Miata roads in heaven, they are going to be just like these".

So glad the roads were dry from the get-go and there were no mishaps on the turns that were heavily covered with damp leaves.

I recall a ride where a buck came from the right and leapt over the hood Jean's new NC. I think a rear hoof clipped the driver's side fender on the way down. No other trauma, luckily.

I also recall another ride having to stop for a tree across the road, but nothing short of a backhoe was going to move that one. We did a slight detour. 😆

Ah, memories...

My wife is right, we need another Miata.

Great stories, Fred. I hope I never have a buck leap over my Miata. Although, if it is going to happen, I hope my wife, Nancy, is with me. That would be a story for the grandchildren.

Thanks for welcoming us on Saturday!

This ride alone was worth the membership.

We are looking forward to being part of LVMOC in 2021.

Gary, that is wonderful to hear. We enjoyed having you and Beth join our group on Saturday. We have two runs scheduled for this coming "rather warm Fall weekend" and hope you are able to join in on one of them.

Walter
