Event Leader -  Walter Cramer

This is the 41st drive this year!!

Walter noticed that the Club had nothing scheduled on its event calendar for Sunday, November 7, so he set out to remedy that!

Please join him for another 90 plus mile drive through Lehigh and Berks counties.  Some of the roads are Club favorites and others will be of the new variety.  The first leg of travel is approximately an hour and fifty minutes, and we will stop at Leaser Lake for our Rest Stop.  Our next leg of travel is approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.  As the title of the Drive suggests, we will head to the Eight Oaks Distillery , in New Tripoli, where the drive will end.  There, we will have Lunch and, of course, a tasting, if you so choose.

This event will follow the current Pennsylvania rules for COVID-19 safety.  To avoid common handling of materials, we will email the directions to participants, for home printing, and we will eliminate the usual paper sign-in sheet.  Since the sign-in confirms your agreement with LVMOC’s standard Waiver and Release, we will now consider your post to this event thread, indicating that you intend to participate, to be your “electronic” signature, indicating your agreement with said Waiver and Release (copy available on request).

We will use FRS radios for communications.  Be sure to arrive by 8:45 a.m. with a full gas tank and an empty bladder 😉.

Attending:

  1. Walter & Nancy
  2. Celia & Warren
  3. Wayne & Comet (if Comet finishes that fence... 😆)

@triviawayne pretty good observation Wayne. Plus, Weis has a bigger selection of snacks.

Good idea, Wayne 🤗.  And, the gas prices at Weis are usually better than those at Sheetz.

Which is really strange when you consider Weis Gas N Go uses Sheetz gas. (Or at least they did when Gas N Go started)

Sorry to come back so late, but thanks Walter for such an awesome drive! Still smiling at the thought of these roads and scenery.

Regarding Sheetz, my observation is they seem to cater to the "fart can" crowd for some reason.

Regarding spare tires, if our NCs had them, they might not be usable at this point anyway with a 7 year lifespan. AAA all the way!

I've been in and out of this club a couple of times. In its current form I have to say, it's pretty awesome.

I agree. I believe it’s due to a combination of new innovative methods of member recruitment, such as utilizing social media and even old fashioned things like printing out business cards with the Club info and leaving them under the wipers of Miatas I/we see wherever (I’ve probably left over a dozen of them just myself). Also: word of mouth. Jeff told me about the club and about an upcoming drive back when I had my NC2, and I just showed up at the time & location and was given a warm welcome and even tho I was not a paid member I was permitted to participate in the my first drive and it was a blast.

I remember our future Prez Lou showed up in his gorgeous ND RF and we introduced ourselves for the first time. Everyone is also very kind and respectful to each other.

I admit that b/c I am a bit younger than most Miata owners, I was a bit intimidated wondering if it was okay for me to just show up - but every single member that day - at the Wawa off 611, greeted me warmly. Kindness goes a long way. Longer than many think. It’s the core that successful & specific communities are built upon

The efforts of our officials who have made sure there are many multiple drives at varying times and days of the week is also great because of the flexibility, usually one can find a time or day of the week that will work for them. The meticulous planning of our routes weeks a head of time with dry runs and such is above and beyond what I ever expected. I think those reasons are part of why membership has I believe doubled ?

The 7-year lifespan thing wouldn't be as big a deal for a spare.  You just have to be careful driving on it, and since it would likely be a donut spare, you'd have to be careful anyway.

Basically, the 7-year thing comes from the rubber (or some component of it) breaking down over time and causing loss of grip.  So it's not that you can't use the tire, it's just not the best of ideas to use it.  It's not like the tire is going to blow out during careful driving or lose all the air because of the age; it's all about the grip level.

This is part of what killed Paul Walker.  The tires were nine years old (or something like that), and the car was known not to have a bunch of grip with the factory tires when new (it was a collector car with low miles and original tires).  With the lack of grip from the old tires, the driver lost control while going about 85mph.

Wayne - had no idea about that regarding Paul Walker. Thought it was just reckless driving. Such a tragedy and bizarre because he became an international superstar by driving high performance vehicles at high speeds (or at least his stunt driver did).

@stormnd2club I heard about the tires being 9 years old, and that they were a contributing factor in the accident. I swore that very day to never let my tires get that old!!!! So every day that I drive, I degrade my tires for three!

Thanks, Fred!  We had some difficult times for a couple of years, but some good folks came forward and worked hard to bring things around 👍.

That is quite a fine compliment to our Club, Fred. I happen to agree with you in all the accolade you gave the membership and officers. Rest assure, you are one of those fine people. Not only do you smile and interact with others at our starting points, when help was needed last Sunday you were one of the first to offer AAA assistance. You provided a great service. Thank You.

P.S. Hope you are enjoying that 8 Oaks Pinot Noir Bourbon.

Walter
