NOTE - Since our lunch stop is outdoors, with no cover, this will be a fair-skies only event!
As most of you know, every year on January 1, some of our more adventurous members head out for our annual top-down Polar Bear Drive in all but the worst winter conditions. The Un-Polar Bear Drive is the summer version of the New Year's Day event, during which our hardy troopers gather with their winter gear stored in their trunks (inluding ski hats, mitts, jackets, wool scarves, shovels, etc.) and then pose in that gear while baking under the hot sun for a photo shoot. This is followed by the quick shedding of gear and a drive that includes curves and cones... Ice Cream Cones, that is (after all, we must involve something icy!).
The drive will begin at the south end of the Weis Market parking lot, near Winchester Road. We will re-visit some of the roads from previous Un-Polar Bear drives, and there will be some new additions to the route. Our lunch / ice cream stop will be at Heisler's Cloverleaf Dairy, near Tamaqua, for treats that should be appropriate for what will hopefully be a warm, sunny day. You may bring a picnic lunch, if you wish (Heisler's has burgers, hot dogs, barbeque, pierogies, etc.). There are rest rooms and benches, but no tables... you might want to bring camping / folding chairs to help with social distancing. Also, Heisler's is currently not accepting credit cards... it's CASH ONLY.
This event will follow the current Pennsylvania rules for COVID-19 safety. We will require that all participants maintain six-foot social distancing, and we will require masks to be worn when not in our cars (or stuffing our faces with ice cream). To avoid common handling of materials, we will email the directions to participants, for home printing, and we will eliminate the usual paper sign-in sheet. Since the sign-in confirms your agreement with LVMOC’s standard Waiver and Release, we will now consider your post to this event thread, indicating that you intend to participate, to be your “electronic” signature, indicating your agreement with said Waiver and Release (copy available on request).
This drive will be limited to 20 cars, including the leader, with priority given to paid LVMOC members. If the 20-car limit is not met, we will open the drive to non-members.
We will use FRS radios for communications. Be sure to arrive at the departure point with a full gas tank and an empty bladder 😏.

Hi,
Please add Bob and Ginny. I am a very new member - we will be in my red '91.
We do not have FRS radios. Where do we get these?
Bob, you can find FRS two-way radios on Amazon and other online retailers. They generally come in pairs. You won't need the more powerful, and more expensive, GMRS variety. I have a pair of Midland base-level units that I got off the clearance shelf at Tractor Supply a few years ago, and they work fine for this application. Mine don't have privacy codes or weather scanners, but I have no need for those. I see Midlands on Amazon for as low as $39.99 a pair. I would stick with a known brand, such as Midland, Motorola, etc.
Our gang usually has extras to loan out on our driving events. As I said above, they are usually sold in pairs, and we need only one of them in our car.
Hope this helps!
David

I believe Corrina and I will be in the same car, as I think Justin and Tara may be skipping this one.
However, I have been messaging with two non-members, who would like to join us to see what we are all about. So I will hope to see them there.

Thanks, Louie, I'll remove one of your spots from the list.
If possible, please encourage those two non-members, with whom you conversed, to log into this thread and post their intentions of joining the drive. At this point, it looks like we'll have no problem adding a couple of guest cars.
It's important that any guests are aware of the Club's social distancing requirements at the drives!

I will let them know. Hopefully they will show. I am hoping for a firmer response as we continue to get closer to Saturday.
