When -                   Sunday, August 21, 2022

                                  Arrive:                     7:45 a.m.

                                  Drivers' Meeting:   8:15 a.m.

                                  Depart:                   8:30 a.m.

Where -                  Macungie, PA Weis Market Parking Lot

                                  3440 Grandview Drive

                                  Macungie, PA Location

End -                      At the Hillclimb Event

Event Leader -  Mike Weil ("Miata Mike")

Join Miata Mike as he leads a group from Macungie to Reading to watch the SCCA Hill Climb as the drivers race up the hill to the Pagoda.

Meet in the parking lot of Weis grocery store near the gas pumps.  Across the street is a Wawa also.

This will be limited to around 18 cars for the drive, with priority given to paid LVMOC members

Plan for the day

Please be aware: To get around at the event there will be walking up and down the road (about half mile each way) to the starting line and where the pits are.  There is also grass area to get to the race road to walk though to watch some of the corners which are fun spots to watch the racers.

* Drive will start in Macungie and will cover many great roads to the Pagoda area.

* There will be a bathroom stop at a Weis 1.5hrs into the drive.  Then about another 25min to the hill.

* Arrive at the event around 10:45am.

(Everyone is free to do as they please but here are some thoughts on what I’m planning to do)

* Watch some racing till they break for lunch around noon

* When racing stops walk down the pits to check out the cars

* Watch starting line when racing starts back up

* Walk back up road to watch some more corners

I only have roads planned out to get there and the drive ends at the event.  If anyone wants to drive back with me to Quakertown area they are welcome to and I will most likely backtrack most of the roads we drove to get there.

Lunch and bathrooms at the event

At the starting line there are portable bathrooms and food vendors.  I am planning to pack a lunch to bring.

Parking at the event

Will be along the street parking where we can find spots

FUN FACT:

The road is named for the obscure automobile maker and following the same route that Charles Duryea used to test his cars, this is a 2.3-mile (3.7 km) hill located in a beautiful city park in downtown Reading. With a history dating back to 1951.  The SCCA Hillclimb association says it is possibly the most diverse and challenging hill in the Northeast.

 Drive Overview -

Macungie to Pagoda

  • Head out from Macungie travelling briefly on Route 100 then to the backroads
  • Backroads passing through Barto, Boyertown, passing the Landis Store Hotel, Pikeville, Oley then onto Reading
  • Bathroom stop at Weis near the Pagoda
  • Continue to the Pagoda

This event will follow the current Pennsylvania rules for COVID-19 safety.  To avoid common handling of materials, we will email the directions to participants, for home printing, and we will eliminate the usual paper sign-in sheet.  Since the sign-in confirms your agreement with LVMOC’s standard Waiver and Release, we will now consider your post to this event thread, indicating that you intend to participate, to be your “electronic” signature, indicating your agreement with said Waiver and Release (copy available on request).

We will use FRS radios for communications.  Be sure to arrive at 7:45 a.m. with a full tank and an empty bladder 😉!

Corrina and I have attended this event before. Really neat watching a 1948 Jaguar go up, followed by a Miata, followed by a NASCAR styled car.

@dotachin10

It nice to hear from you again, Nobu... it's been a while.  I was hoping you'd take some time away from running and join us on another of our drives!  Welcome back!

@flying-dutchman Hi David - I am really happy to be back! I just got back to this area on August 9 and did not get my winter tire swapped until 2 days ago. Now that I’m back I will be signing up more drives for sure! (Even though I also have very busy running/racing schedule, haha!)

Nobu
