When:     Saturday, October 8, 2022

                Arrive:                     8:45 a.m

                Driver's Meeting:     9:15 a.m.

Depart:                    9:30 a.m.  See NOTE below.

Where:   Macungie, PA - WEIS Market parking lot

                3440 Grandview Drive

                Macungie, PA    MAP

End:        Eight Oaks Farm Distillery & Kitchen, PA 309, New Tripoli

Event Leaders:  Dave Povenski, driver (a.k.a. the stig) & Michele Kane, navigator.

Limit of 20 people (4 people per table/booth) due to limited seating at Buddies Log Cabin.  Priority to paid members.  So in your RSVP mention if you will have a navigator or will be driving solo.

NOTE:  We will be leaving precisely @ 9:30.  Gas, restrooms and food are available at the WEIS and at the nearby Wawa and Turkey Hill.  Plan accordingly.  We want to get to Buddy's at a less busy time for brunch.

Because we use the facilities at Hawk Mountain for this drive, Polar Bear and occasionally others, I would appreciate each driver donating $5 to help them out with the wonderful work they do.  I will collect during the driver's meeting.  Thanks in advance!

Circle your wagons (or Miatas if you have no Conestogas lying around) for another edition of ...

WESTWARD HO!

THIS IS A RAIN OR SHINE EVENT.  ONLY HEAVY SNOW, A TORNADO WARNING, AN EARTHQUAKE (min. 6.0), A VOLCANIC ERUPTION or ARMAGEDDON WILL CANCEL.

WHAT Westward HO doesn't have:  Wagon trains and indigenous people shooting at us.

WHAT Westward HO does have:

Length:  167 miles. You may want to bring a snack and beverage.

Scenery:  Some good, some great, some so so and some coal crackin' ugly.

Ups & Downs:  This route has more ups and downs than a whack-a-mole game.  Over 29,434' worth!  We're talkin' Mt. Everest.

Entertaining Roads:  Part of PA 863 (including the corkscrew), Hawk Mountain, Lutz Valley, Ferebee/Flat Hill, Goldmine, PA125, Brockton Mountain/Moss Glen, and Gun Club (off of PA 309) to name a few of my favorites.

StopsHawk Mountain (mi 30, for those who drank too much morning coffee), brunch at "Buddy's Log Cabin" for brunch (mi 59), Burger King (mi 103, to unload Buddy's coffee), and Leiby's Ice Cream House & Restaurant for ICE CREAM (mi 150), and finishing at Eight Oaks Farm Distillery & Kitchen (mi 167)

Buddy's is famous for it's extra crispy, instantly artery clogging, deep fried bacon BACON BACON BACON! and its "bet you can't eat more than one" pancakes (ask Alison).  Buddy's is worth the drive by itself!  And did I mention ICE CREAM!?

Needless to say, this is an all day drive.  Figure around 4:15 of driving time and around 7:00 total time including stops & food up to the 8 Oaks Distillery.

We hope you'll join us!

@flatline Short answer, no.  I haven't led a drive in awhile and I don't want a lot of cars on the ride.  If I make one exception, I open up a can of worms.  Sorry.  Michele or I will send out the route instructions to those on the wait list after the drive.  Also, if you or the other waitlisters are free on 10/4, you could join us for the prerun.

Michele and I pre-ran the route today and made some updates to the event description.  The main change is the ice cream stop is changing from Heisler's to Leiby's since Heisler's has closed for the season.  We have added time estimates also.

It was pointed out to me that I failed to include the legalese in my event description.  I have added it (the blurb in italics).  If for some reason this changes your desire to participate, let me know.  Thanks.

Does Eight Oaks have a restaurant for food or is it just hooch?

I do not see anything on their website for food.

@ken-hill

Ken, eight oaks does offer food and non alcoholic beverages.

By the way, on Saturday, John Pitino, myself and you can discuss traveling together to the Back of the dragon in Wytheville, VA on the 13th. Mike still is not sure of his travel plans.

Thanks for the information Walter. Evan will want something to eat at the end of the drive so I feel better knowing they have food.

We can certainly talk about the drive down to Wytheville. I’ve made the trip so often, I know the route by heart.

Great Drive today, Michele and Dave. Thanks for offering this to our Club. A well done run. The way folks were loving and complimenting the grand roads, it seems I am not alone in enjoying the day.

Buddy's turned out to be everything you had prepared us for. Neil did a great job in knocking off his grandiose pancake and the bacon was truly delicious. Leiby's was a great choice for our ice cream stop.

All in all, a delightful day. And I was able to keep my heater running the entire Drive.

At some point during the drive somebody asked what counties we drove in.  I finally did the research.  We started in Lehigh, crossed the NE tip of Berks when we went through Kempton.  Then the drive was in Schuylkill until we drove into the southern end of Northumberland when we were in the Shamokin area.  From there it was back into Schuylkill and ending back in Lehigh.
