It's time again for the summer version of LVMOC's annual New Year's Day Polar Bear Drive. For the UN-Polar Bear Drive, our hardy troopers gather, in mid-summer, with their winter gear stored in their trunks (inluding ski hats, mitts, jackets, wool scarves, shovels, etc.) and then pose in that gear while baking under the hot sun for a photo shoot . This is followed by the quick shedding of gear and a drive that includes curves and cones... Ice Cream Cones, that is (after all, we must involve something icy!).
This will be a PICNIC LUNCH drive, (members requested more of these at our General Membership Meeting, on May 21, 2022). Our lunch / ice cream stop will be at Heisler's Cloverleaf Dairy, near Tamaqua, for treats that should be appropriate for what will hopefully be a warm, sunny day. We suggest that you bring a picnic lunch, or, if you wish, Heisler's has burgers, hot dogs, barbeque, pierogies, etc. There is a covered pavilion with tables and benches, or you might want to bring camping / folding chairs.
After visiting Heisler's, we will follow more fun roads to the drive's end, back in Fogelsville near the intersection of Main St (Old U.S. 22) and PA-100.
This event will follow the current Pennsylvania rules for COVID-19 safety. To avoid common handling of materials (remember, COVID is still hanging around...), we will email the directions to participants, for home printing, and we will eliminate the usual paper sign-in sheet. Since the sign-in confirms your agreement with LVMOC’s standard Waiver and Release, we will now consider your post to this event thread, indicating that you intend to participate, to be your “electronic” signature, indicating your agreement with said Waiver and Release (copy available on request).
There will be two groups of cars on this drive... Walter has offered to lead half the cars. This is great, since smaller groups generally require less time to pass thru intersections, and there's less regrouping.
We will use FRS radios for communications. Be sure to arrive at the departure point with a full gas tank and an empty bladder . Don't forget your winter gear!!

Update! Sorry for last minute change. Micah will be riding with me. Insurance problem so not taking the other car. Thanks
Please remove Dawn and Tom from the list. We will not be able to make today's drive.

Dave, thanks for putting together and offering this Drive for the Club. You put together a very nice series of roads for the Un-Polar Bear Drive. I can see why there was so much acclaim for your Polar Bear Drive back in January. Well Done.
And another huge thank you to the tail of Group 2, Jefff and Haley. Haley did not miss a beat today on the FRS. And Jeff made sure our group stayed together. Great Job you two.
Walter
Thank you, Walter. Also, thank you for leading a group of half the cars... the smaller groups really make a drive more enjoyable for all! I know this week turned out to be quite busy for you, and you didn't get a chance to pre-run the route. Great job! 👍
Thanks, also, to Wanda and Jerry for tailing my group and ensuring that we lost no one, and thanks to Janice, my capable navigator, for keeping me (mostly) on track.
Finally, thanks to all who participated in this event! You came out, donned your winter duds (thus, the "Polar Bear") for the photos, and bravely navigated those icy roads (OK, a little imagination, here, folks...). I had fun... hope you did, too 😛!

Fantastic route Dave! An amazing array of twisties and tree covered Miata roads! And a great idea to split into 2 groups. Walter kept a nice pace, the radios reached stem to stern, and we had very few alien incursions. This, ladies and gentlemen, is why this is a perennial favorite!

Big thanks to @flying-dutchman for putting together this ride and @rhetlaw for leading one of the groups! Haley refers to those tree covererd Miata roads that @livetodrive speaks of as tree tunnels of doom. I asked her why and she said "would you like to be walking these roads all by yourself at night?" 🤣
The roads were wonderful, the weather was beautiful and the company was fantastic!
