Presidential note: This is drive number 37!

Join Walter for an all day, tri-state drive to Hawks Nest, Port Jervis, NY. The ride begins in Pennsylvania, travels North through New Jersey, crosses into New York State followed by a return trip over the Delaware River and back home into Pennsylvania.

On Sunday, October 10th we will be meeting at the Shell Station, 428 Nor Bath Boulevard, Northampton (old Kopper Penny) at 8:45 with at Driver’s meeting at 9:15 and Depart at 9:30.

Our first leg of travel is approximately an hour and forty minutes, and 57 miles, to the Acme Store in Blairstown, NJ for our rest stop.

Our second leg of travel is approximately an hour and thirty minutes, and 40 miles, to the Erie Hotel in Port Jervis for lunch (Note that the Erie Hotel offers only INDOOR dining).

After lunch (approximately 2:30) we will travel to the summit of Point Peter to the Elks-Brox Memorial Park to enjoy splendid views of Port Jervis, the Delaware River and the surrounding countryside. The road to the summit is Skyline Drive. It is a mini-hillclimb and contains two hairpin curves - one left and one right.

Our final leg of travel has us driving route 97 through the community of Hawks Nest and ultimately the curvy section of that road known as Hawks Nest drive. We continue North for twelve miles to enjoy magnificent views of the Delaware River, cross into Pennsylvania and navigate back home via a blend of Miata roads and Touring roads.

Don’t expect to return to the valley until 5:30 p.m. or so. However, if time is an issue for you, you can do a return run on Hawks Nest and pick up route 209 /route 6 at Port Jervis and head directly home.

This event will follow the current Pennsylvania rules for COVID-19 safety.  To avoid common handling of materials, we will email the directions to participants, for home printing, and we will eliminate the usual paper sign-in sheet.  Since the sign-in confirms your agreement with LVMOC’s standard Waiver and Release, we will now consider your post to this event thread, indicating that you intend to participate, to be your “electronic” signature, indicating your agreement with said Waiver and Release (copy available on request).

We will use FRS radios for communications.  Be sure to arrive by 8:45 a.m. with a full gas tank and an empty bladder 😏.

Oh man this sounds like a great one but I'm driving out to Ohio for a wedding next weekend.

Brian, sorry you are unable to join us. I was hoping you schedule would allow it. I know there are several elements of the Drive you would enjoy, however, having lunch at the original Erie (Railroad) Hotel would have been on the top of the list.

Alison, I did not realize this until I did my pre-run last Saturday, the Erie Hotel also offers "outdoor dining".

Great! 🙂 I have been swamped working the last couple of months. Usually Thursdays (sometimes Wednesdays even) thru Sundays - no time to do anything else - but as of this moment I am off this coming Sunday. 🙂

For the History buffs in this group. A link to some history of the Erie Hotel where we will be having lunch. https://theeriehotel.com/hotel

Also, a photo of the original 1890 German hand carved back bar in the Erie Hotel

Sounds good, Doug. After we run through Hawks Nest there are several places to pull into and head back the way you came. You will be able to run it a second time prior to your heading back home.

Although, we will have been on a lot more interesting Miata roads in our travel than Hawks Nest - Skyline Drive is one of them.

Someone needs to kick me hard to do these brakes, brand new beautiful brembo calipers, stainless steel lines, pads, rotors, sitting on my floor.

I think it’s the brake bleeding that keeps me from doing it. Real pain if you don’t have someone to help. Maybe I’ll order those special bleeder screws that push out fluid but don’t allow air in. I dunno.

Walter...   I have to cancel on this one.   Never gave a thought to how long this one was.   My dog is sixteen years old and is not doing well.   This run is too long of a day for me, it's an hour for me to just get to the starting point, then probably longer to get back home, and he can't be alone that long.   If the run gets done again, sign me up for it then.   Thanks so much, Bill

Bill, so sorry you and your NA are not going to be able to join us. However, myself and several others in this Club are not only dog lovers, we are dog owners. And all these folks know exactly what you are struggling with.

As difficult as it is, I believe we both know you have made the correct, mature and loving decision. See you on the next one.

dogs make life so much better.

but it’s bitter sweet because we have to say goodbye sometimes.

I have two little Chihuahuas that I love more than anything - but I have been there before losing my Pugs, German Shepards and Doberman.. amongst others. Our thoughts are with you, Bill.
