When: Saturday, 8/31/2024

Arrive: 9:30 a.m.

Driver’s Meeting: 9:45 a.m.

Departure: 10:00 a.m.

Where: Weis Markets – Macungie 3440 Grandview Drive Macungie, PA

LOCATION

Rest Stop: Weis - Oley

Lunch: Alburtis Tavern

Back in May of 2020, when everyone was tired of staying in due to the pandemic, Michele and I put together a drive of around 50 miles – just to get people out and on the road again. Remember when you were not supposed to be driving around? So, this was an invitation only, non-LVMOC, drive. We called it “The ESSES” because of all the signs indicating those multi-directional changes we all love.

Anyway, The ESSES is (are?) back – in an extended version, about 90 miles – and it is open to all.

The bulk of the drive is in the hills of eastern Berks County where you will find many, many signs indicating multiple turns ahead in both directions. The rest stop will be the Weis in Oley, PA, and lunch at the end of the drive will be at the Alburtis Tavern.

This drive will have an additional twist. Michele and I are going to count all the signs we see showing turns in both directions. At the driver’s meeting, we will hand each driver a piece of paper showing the 5 different signs to count. If you are so inclined, you can count the signs (a co-pilot will be advantageous). At the end of the drive, put your sign count & driver’s name (don’t forget to bring a writing implement!) on the paper and turn it in to Michele or me when we get to the Alburtis Tavern. Whoever gets closest to our count (and our count is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate!) will be the winner. You will be rewarded with a prize worthy of your effort!

Let us know if you’ll be joining us for lunch.

PS: We will be leaving at 10:00, so be ready to go with enough gas and an empty bladder.

PPS: Because many of the roads on this drive are narrow country lanes, and because we have experienced several drivers coming at us over the center line, FRS radios are HIGHLY recommended. That way you will be able to hear us announce that there are oncoming vehicles. If you have an extra FRS radio, please bring it.

Please add Alan, in ZOOMBIE.  I plan on attending lunch as well, but ZOOMBIE thinks he’ll wait outside.
