Event Leader -  Walter Cramer

Join Walter for another new Drive.  This Drive will be about 130 miles in length, with approximately 100 of those miles on our beloved Miata roads.  The additional 30 miles is four lane travel back to our ice cream destination in the Lehigh Valley.  We will have a rest stop at the Delaware Water Gap Welcome Center and picnic lunch at the Big Pocono State Park which at the top of the mountain above Camelback Ski Area and Water Park.  For those interested, we will be ending the drive with Ice Cream at the Klein Farms Dairy & Creamery, north of Easton. With driving, rest stop, lunch and ice cream, this could end up being a 5 1/2 - 6 hour day.  Of course, you can drive to your hearts content and pull off when you’ve had enough.

The views from Big Pocono State Park are exhilarating.  Looking South we see the Delaware Water Gap to our left, Wind Gap area in the center, and the Lehigh Gap to our right.  Looking North you will enjoy more great views of the Pocono Region.

We will be gathering at the Shell Station, 428 Nor Bath Boulevard, Northampton. The Shell Station is at the intersection of route 329 and Howertown Road. We will gather at 9:00 - ish with a Driver’s meeting at 9:15 and a departure time of 9:30.

This event will follow the current Pennsylvania rules for COVID-19 safety.  To avoid common handling of materials, we will email the directions to participants, for home printing, and we will eliminate the usual paper sign-in sheet.  Since the sign-in confirms your agreement with LVMOC’s standard Waiver and Release, we will now consider your post to this event thread, indicating that you intend to participate, to be your “electronic” signature, indicating your agreement with said Waiver and Release (copy available on request).

We will use FRS radios for communications.  Be sure to arrive by 9:00 a.m. with a full gas tank and an empty bladder 😏.

@jim-turner Congratulations Jim!!!! You purchased the best version of Mazda's halo car. If they had your trim level in 2017, that would be my choice too. In fact, I  would have gone through at least one more set of tires on that, compared to my own. Wonderful choice!!!

Hey, thanks, Louie.  It’s such a totally different animal than the NB in many ways (which I still miss, it’s been my frame of reference for the past 13 years).

Prices for pre-owned are crazy now, perhaps even more so for Miata’s.  So I was kind of forced to go new, especially since the NB wasn’t going to pass May inspection.  Not a lot of stock this time of the model year and I drove to Pittsburgh for this one because dealers here only trade more locally.  But it was a showroom model, so while it may have had a lot of seat occupants it only had 3 miles on it, so I could do the engine break-in (rings) myself right off the bat.

Really looking forward to getting back to our club runs and learning this car!

@jim-turner We were just at Scott Mazda this week. I saw zero Miatas. We were both thinking WTH? At this time of year they should have 10 of them. They did not. So odd. You can't buy them if they don't exist! I hope you bought a sandwich in Pittsburgh.  The Rothlisburger is pretty good, albeit large enough for 2 people.

I would guess that the Miata shortage is because of the world wide microchip shortage.

the Miata isn’t Mazda’s best seller, so the chips they do get are going in other vehicles.

I think it’s in Kentucky, but Ford has hundreds (or maybe thousands) of trucks built and parked waiting for chips.

@ctt3mx5

Thanks, Jeff!  Yes, I love that color combo.  Closest I could find in the ND2 RF was the ‘19 machine gray/auburn leather - but (pandemic) prices for pre-owned with <20k miles were upwards of $30k!  For that kind of money, why not buy new?!  It will be great to be back on the road with LVMOC again 👍😊

Sorry but "Marino" over "Rothlisburger" any day of the week!  😉

@triviawayne agreed about the chip shortage and lack of new Miatae.  Makes more sense for Mazda to put the chips they have into the CX-5, CX-30 and 3.

@jim-turner Yes the current used market is ridiculous.  If I were in your shoes, I would have bought new also.  I just hope that whoever buys that '19 at new car pricing gets a "new car smell" air freshener thrown in.

My Saturday plans just fell through,  and new tires get mounted after work today,  so count me in (unless they stick us with mandatory Saturday overtime.)

@ctt3mx5 if I was running Mazda, I would not short the Miata of chips. If joe shows up for a CX5, and there are 8 to choose from, or 20, does it really matter? If you want a Miata, no deal on a CX5 is going to do it. However, it may not be chips. It may be a specific part, or even the whole chassis. At Mack, less than 1% of our trucks are being built with all of it's .parts. We are missing harnesses, brackets, you name it. The whole world stopped mining, manufacturing, and shipping for a year.

If one person wants to buy a CX5 and there’s 8 or 20, it doesn’t matter...

but when 20 people show up to buy a CX5 and there are 20, while at the same time, one shows up to buy a Miata and there are zero; only 1 of 21 buyers go home without a sale.
