When:     Saturday, April 20, 2024

                Arrive:                      8:45 a.m.

                Driver's Meeting:     9:15 a.m.

Depart:                    9:30 a.m.  See NOTE below.

Where:    Macungie, PA - WEIS Market parking lot

                3440 Grandview Drive

                Macungie, PA          MAP

End:        Eight Oaks Farm Distillery & Kitchen, PA 309, New Tripoli

Event Leaders:  Dave Povenski, driver (a.k.a. the stig) & Michele Kane, navigator.

Limit of 10 cars + ours

Paid members will be given priority.

Respondents will be wait listed as necessary based on the above.

NOTE:  We will be leaving precisely @ 9:30.  Gas, restrooms and food are available at the WEIS and at the nearby Wawa and Turkey Hill.  Plan accordingly.  We want to get to Buddy's at a less busy time for brunch.

Because we use the facilities at Hawk Mountain for this drive, Polar Bear and occasionally others, I would appreciate each driver donating $5 to help them out with the wonderful work they do.  I will collect during the driver's meeting.  Thanks in advance!

THIS IS A RAIN OR SHINE EVENT.

Length:  176 miles. You may want to bring a snack and beverage - and you must have a full tank of gas.

Scenery:  Some good, some great, some so-so and some coal crackin' ugly.

Ups & Downs:  This route has more ups and downs than a whack-a-mole game.  Over 31,500' worth!  We're talkin' Mauna Kea from sea bed to summit!

Entertaining Roads:  Part of PA 863 (including the corkscrew), Hawk Mountain, Lutz Valley, Ferebee/Flat Hill, Goldmine, PA125, Brockton Mountain/Moss Glen, and Gun Club (off of PA 309) to name a few of my favorites. There is also an appropriately named road called Wildcat. This roller-coaster of a road is so much fun we’re going to run it in both directions – 6 miles of madness.

Stops:  Hawk Mountain (mi 30, for those who drank too much morning coffee), brunch at "Buddy's Log Cabin" (mi 59), Burger King (mi 103, to unload Buddy's coffee), and Heisler's Cloverleaf Dairy for ICE CREAM (mi 155), and finishing at Eight Oaks Farm Distillery & Kitchen (mi 176)

Buddy's is famous for its extra crispy, deep-fried bacon, and its "bet you can't eat more than one".  Buddy's is worth the drive by itself!  And did I mention ICE CREAM!?

Needless to say, this is an all-day drive.  Figure around 4:15 of driving time and around 7:00 total time including stops & food.

We hope you'll join us!

@the-stig Thank you for catching that!  For whatever reason, I thought you and Michele were not listed and was only looking at numbers.  I made the update.

@rhetlaw Please forgive me Walter, you are now tall enough to ride this ride.

@ctt3mx5 That was well done, Jeff, thanks.  Looks like I'll be wearing my ' big boy ' pants that day.

In your experience, what are the chances of going from second on waiting list to the drive? Due to distance from home, was thinking of getting a hotel room the night before. Just curious.

@redundant There is no good answer for that one as it will depend on at least two people ahead of you removing themselves from the ride.  Now that said, I have seen instances where no one on the wait list gets bumped up to seeing three people getting bumped up.  All I can say is to keep an eye on the thread and if someone does cancel, hope that they do it in time that allows you to make your arrangements.

@annette1265 Will Jim be joining you?  Only ask as it gives Dave and Michele a better idea of the party size for Buddy's and Eight Oaks.

@redundant One of the biggest factors in people dropping out is the weather.  This is a rain or shine event and there are those that won't bring out their cars in the rain.

@ronaldlee SURE!  No limit on people, just cars.

The Stig's "Westward Ho" is, in my opinion, one of the best drives on the LVMOC calendar.  I have enjoyed it enormously in the past and I'm sure I will again in the future.

This time around, however, I will give up my spot in the hope that someone who has never had the pleasure will get to experience this awesome drive for the first time.

Cheers!

@mike-c Thanks for the kind words, Mike.  I'll remove you from the attendees and add Buzz.

Wow, Mike C, that is incredibly generous. I have not taken that drive yet, as I just started with ya’ll last fall. Would love to take it. However, Buzz is next on the list, but I don’t know if he has been on this drive before and he may want to take the place regardless, so I will let the more experienced hands officiate. But, thanks for that offer Mike.

Jim
