This drive is a pre-run for a Club event being planned for a future date.
Hawk's Nest is a small section of the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway. It is famous for many things. First and foremost is in the beauty of its vistas. On one side of the highway you have the Catskill Mountains and on the other, well below the road elevation, is the Delaware River. In addition to its beauty, Hawks Nest is a draw for roadster and motorcycle enthusiasts as the roads are known to be curvy and twisty.
Below is a link to some history and photos of Hawk's Nest. In the third of fourth paragraph you will find the words “Porsche Commercial”. Be sure to click on them to check out the commercial. There is also a link to a GoPro video of a drive along that length of the road. Once viewed, there is no doubt in my mind someone is this Club will attempt to replicate, albeit with a Miata.

The drive to Hawk's Nest will be all back roads and consists of three legs of travel. The first is one hour in length from WAWA to a Dunkin Donuts in Portland, PA. The second leg is approximately two hours in length and the rest area is a Dunkin Donuts in Port Jervis, NY. The final leg to Hawk's Nest is twenty minutes of travel.
The drive home will be more direct and is approximately two and a half hours. Those interested in joining me on this pre-run should plan on bringing snacks, a picnic lunch and camping chairs.
This event will follow the current Pennsylvania rules for COVID-19 safety. We will require that all participants maintain six-foot social distancing, and we will require masks to be worn when not in our cars. To avoid common handling of materials, we will email the directions to participants, for home printing, and we will eliminate the usual paper sign-in sheet. Since the sign-in confirms your agreement with LVMOC’s standard Waiver and Release, we will now consider your post to this event thread, indicating that you intend to participate, to be your “electronic” signature, indicating your agreement with said Waiver and Release (copy available on request).
This drive will be limited to 15 cars, including the leader, with priority given to paid LVMOC members. If the 15 car limit is not met, we will open the drive to non-members.
We will use FRS radios for communications. Be sure to arrive at the departure point with a full gas tank and an empty bladder .

Aw man, I am going to have to miss this one! 🙁 But I will be looking forward to when the actual run is scheduled.
Getting my winter tires mounted that morning at 9am and have to work on getting the basement empty. We have a guy coming Sunday morning to diamond grind the floor and then epoxy it.

As difficult as it is, you are making the correct decision. We will miss you on this run.
Those winter tires are a necessity and it sounds like your basement floor is going to be Awesome.
Yeah, adulting sucks! lol Have fun out there and be safe!
We are excited to get the floor done, picked battleship grey for the color with a mix of black, white and light gry chips scattered throughout. The hard part will be going without a washer/dryer for 10 days.

Ah, the black, white & gray chips... have fun trying to spot little things that drop on the floor 😆.

This is were we will be enjoying our picnic lunch tomorrow. We are atop the Twin Mountain Tract of Point Phillip and Mount William in the Catskill Mountains overlooking the Delaware River Valley and Port Jervis.
That is what walking around barefoot is for. 🤣 But good point, going to be fun trying to find Legos....guess we should have thought about this more. haha
Tam put a kabosh to bright green and orange. LMAO
Absolutely beautiful!

Absolutely beautiful!
So happy today is going to be another gorgeous Miata driving day.
Looking forward to introducing the group to the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway. In addition to Hawks Nest, there is the Tri-State Monument, Skyline Drive, Elks-Brox Memorial Park and the John Roebling Aqueduct in Lackawaxen.
The Aqueduct is a one land bridge crossing the Delaware River. Travel goes both ways. If vehicles are approaching, one just has to be patient. Thirty years later, John Roebling designed the Brooklyn Bridge.

A bridge enough people thought wasn’t safe, and at the opening was the longest suspension bridge in the world. To help people feel safe about crossing, PT Barnum took 21 elephants and 17 camels across.

Good to know, Wayne. Yesterday we know for a fact the Aqueduct supported five Miatas. Four from the Lehigh Valley and one from Northeastern Pennsylvania. Actually, there were two Miatas in front of us on route 97, however, one peeled off prior to crossing on the Aqueduct.
Neil McShane was driving his '90 red Miata with his twelve year old son as navigator. He picked the Miata up a couple years ago to teach his daughter how to drive stick shift. After that training was successful, he said, "driving the Miata was so much fun, he decided to keep it".
We exchanged contact information. We may see Neil at one of our drives next season.

Dave, thanks for these images. For me, it clears up all of my questions why this suspension bridge is called an Aqueduct.
Interesting the the D & H Canal was built / developed in 1828. The Erie Canal began construction in 1827 and the Lehigh Canal in 1825. Once the Lehigh Canal was completed, our Anthracite Coal was shipped more easily from Wilkes Barre to Philadelphia and ports south.
The Erie Canal allowed for our Anthracite coal to more easily reach Albany, NY and then New York City.
@stormnd2club did you guys also saw bikers at Hawk’s Nest during the pre-run? Me and my wife ran into quite a few in October 2018 (as seen in attached photo).
Well, i found out thar I have to mail in my plea before being able to pay my ticket... so annoying we have to wait to find out how much it was 😒
Otherwise, thanks again for a great day Walter and crew.
