As a new member, new Miata owner, and new to using short range two way radios, need suggestions as to good, better, best FRS or GMRS the club uses now, but may look to change to int he future. Obviously, with "zero" "ride" experience, but years of aviation experience, we do want to fit in and be good team members. Thanx

Good= anything for the $40 range. However, good means so-so range and crap volume. Walter has excellent ones. So I invested in the same ones. We use Midland ones from Amazon. They were 69.99 for the pair, with rechargeable batteries and base. I noticed the range is better and the volume is three times louder. I give the other one to the Tail on my drives, so I can hear my tail ( the farthest car from me) clearly.  If someone needs a radio, I loan out my $40 Cobra ones. If you are in the middle of the pack, you can hear people, albeit quietly.

Dave, back in 2010-11 when Nancy and I joined LVMOC I was in the same situation you are now. At that time the Club was using CB radios. I posed the same question that you are posing now to a Club member, Ralph Fenner. He directed me well. He directed me to a handheld Midland CB unit. It has worked so well.

Five years ago another Club that Nancy and I are members of uses FRS radios. I ran the same question by Ralph and he showed me his FRS radio and it was a Midland unit in the cost range that Louie mentioned - $70.00. God Bless, Ralph. I have such great success with this Midland unit.

So you know what my recommendation would be.

We don't utilize GMRS capability, Dave.  We switched from CB to FRS because the ND Miatas have no decent place on which to stick a magnetic-mount CB antenna... they're all aluminum and composite.

I bought a pair of Cobra radios in the $40 range.  They have worked well on the drives I have attended since buying them.

I chose Motorola FRS radios in the $70 price range.  I've had them for several years, they have worked very well, and I have no complaints about them.

Their battery charge will last longer than one day and they have sufficient volume to be heard and understood regardless of ambient noise, of which there can be A LOT in a Miata.    🤣 🤣 🤣

Does Walmart or Best Buy have any? I ordered some from Amazon but they’re still floating around somewhere, and I wanted to have my own for tomorrow’s drive so I don’t have to bother anyone to borrow there’s

Don't worry about it, Jordan, you are not a bother. I have a Midland FRS you can borrow.

Appreciate it. I’d say 1 out of 8 times I order from amazon lately something is up w the shipping. I’ve been waiting for a touch up pen for 3 weeks.

I bought mine at Best Buy.  Pretty sure they had a few in the $70 range if that is what you were interested in.

Cool. I’m going to give these another week to show up and if they don’t going to cancel and request refund on amazon. Usually they’re pretty good with that at least.

Thank you all for the superb advice. Tremendous response! Currently, "cruising" southeast Minnesota in other than the Miata..., so... will attempt to secure the FRS upon return to Lititz ASAP.
